Vanity Facelift

The last two big projects I am planning to do myself before baby girl Rayome arrives are to give our bathroms an update! The kids bathroom, which I am starting this week, is going to be a pretty good overhaul, but the master would cost a crazy amount to truly gut like it needs (tiny shower and giant heart shaped tub. Not really feeling that long term LOL).

So my plan for the master is to give each section a little facelift that I can live with for several years while we save up to actually gut it. Again, this is why I like blogging. Yes it’s amaing to see a complete gut and remodel, but realistically that doesn’t work for a lot of people’s budgets. So the the next section of this bathroom I am tackling (after painting and doing a few accent walls), is the vanity!

This picture is from this listing, but you can see how it had the giant mirror. That in and of itself didn’t kill me, but the old light fixture was installed on the angled ceiling and the shone it’s light right into the mirror. Not ideal. So by removing the mirror, we were able to break up the electric in order to put a fixture over each sink!

So once the electric was split, I could either repair all the drywall, or continue the shiplap that I had already started throughout the room. Pretty easy guess what I choose :) If I don’t love it later on, we can always have it corrected in the big remodel, but like I said, I’m thinking that’s going to be a hot second.

This first board was a real bear. We used a drill to start the hole and then a jigsaw to cut around the electrical base. It had to be as exact as possible so that the light fixture still had plenty to thred on to attach to the wall. This took a few tries.

Once that top board was on, it was pretty smooth sailing for the rest of them. I choose to make the top and bottom boards wider than the middle ones since the trim would cover several inches of them. This also allowed me to not need any special horizontal cuts.

Next up was adding trim. I didn’t do this at my old house, and for the most part I really like the cleaner edges it gives, and have started doing it on just about all the wood wall projects I do. The other thing I have started doing is SEALANT. I swear by it now. It’s a pain and messy (at least when I do it) but it hides so many imperfections, both from the contractor, and my rookie self.

Hardware was the next thing to go. This gold hardware basically filled the home. I’m really liking black lately, and it’s such a simple way to update a fixture and make it feel new.

And there you go! A good clean, changing the mirrors and light fixtures, and updating the hardware, and it hardly looks like the same place! Next up in here is changing out the shower door. Rusting and gold aren’t our favorite combo. But until I magically learn how to do that, keep an eye out for our kids bathroom coming up next!
